One of the oldest schools in Cambridgeshire is Barnabas Oley Primary School, which may have the longest continuous history of any English primary school. The school, which bears the Reverend Barnabas Oley's name, is located in the centre of the village of Great Gransden and was built there in 1670. Later, it grew too tiny, so our second benefactor, Mr. T.V. Webb, had the well-known Victorian school built in 1866. Barnabas Oley had a significant role in the development of Great Gransden village and the school, restoring the church, constructing the vicarage, and constructing the original school building as well as several almshouses. As a fellow at Clare College, Reverend Barnabas Oley actively supported the Royalist cause during the English Civil War. Every year on Founder's Day in St. Bartholomew's Church, we have a service to honour Barnabas Oley. A Fellow of Clare College presents a "Oley Bible" to students as they leave the institution. Former students who are pursuing further education are also eligible for a "Oley Book Grant." We believe we should keep fostering and strengthening our relationship with Clare College since we are quite proud of it. Our recognisable blue uniform, complete with its Gransden Mill insignia from the seventeenth century, was first worn in 1964.
