From the Sydenham High School GDST
Sydenham was one of the final schools to be founded by the Girls' Public Day School Trust and was established in 1887.
Mr. Chadwick, a local Sydenham citizen, petitioned the Trust to open the School after becoming enraged by the local schools' arrogance.
Originally, the school was located in a private home that had once been the Longton Hall Hydropathic Hotel. While this location had great charm and romantic appeal, it was not always comfortable or accessible for the students, who frequently got lost.
These early headmistresses set the school's goals, which are still relevant today. They were committed to giving girls a top-notch education and making sure that they understood the value of a high education for its own reason and the significance of showing consideration for others.
Dr. Smith took over as Headmistress in 1931 and managed the school's transfer to Horner Grange in 1934. Horner Grange is a stunning Victorian home next to Longton Hall, a former diamond merchant's home with pheasants on the lawn and its own magnificent ballroom.
With enough room for the facilities needed for a modern education, the entire school could now be housed in a single place.
West Hill's temporary laboratories were replaced with purpose-built ones thanks to funding from the GDST and parent fundraising efforts, recognising the growing relevance of science in the curriculum.
Within the school grounds, a hockey field and a new school hall were constructed.
The school was relocated to Brighton and Hove High School in 1939, at the start of the Second World War, where it shared facilities with Streatham High School.
However, after France's surrender, Brighton was no longer regarded as a secure haven, and the school relocated to Westwood Hill in 1940.
When Miss Yardley succeeded Miss Smith in 1941, the school's enrollment had dropped from over 300 to less than 100 students.
